Symptoms and Cures for Thrush in Babies   by Vanessa Roberts

When your baby is sick your first thought is to figure out the problem and find a treatment fast. It is even worse when they are cranky and irritable and you cannot seem to put your finger on the problem than is causing them the discomfort.

If you have discovered that your child has little patches of white on the inside of their mouth and maybe even on the insides of their cheeks then chances are they have a case of thrush. It is something that is common in babies and is treatable so you can breathe easy.

There are several causes for thrush in babies such as you may have had a touch of it during delivery and they contracted it that way or if you are taking antibiotics after delivery and you are breastfeeding.

It is very easy for mother and baby to pass it back and forth until you take the steps to get rid of it completely. If you are not sure that your baby has thrush then you can look for the characteristics to know for sure and you can contact your pediatrician to double check your findings.

As mentioned earlier, you will notice white patches on the tongue or on the inside of the cheeks. You can use your finger, be sure to wrap it in something such as gauze then gently wipe a patch with your finger. The patch may not come off easily and it is possible that there may be a little bleeding as well in the infected area. These areas will be sore to the touch so do not be alarmed if your baby starts to cry as you are doing this.

Another sign or symptom of thrush in babies is a change in the way that they eat. There could be a slowdown in the frequency or even just some hesitation when it comes to food or putting anything in their mouths. Since the mouth is going to be sore it will be hard for them to nurse so keep an eye out for this as well. Your pediatrician can prescribe you medication for your baby such as Nystatin that is sage for them and will help with the discomfort.

During the treatment period be sure to keep bottle nipples, pacifiers and anything else that they may put in their mouths clean for a couple of weeks so you know that the infection is gone for good.
